Kurdish Short Film “Sea of Hope” Competes for Awards at Australia’s International Science Film Festival
ARK News.. The Kurdish short film “Sea of Hope” (Deryayê Hêvî) has qualified to compete for awards at the 26th edition of Australia’s International Science Film Festival, one of the largest scientific film events in the Southern Hemisphere.
According to Kurdistan24, the film’s director, Gabriel Abu Bakr, said his film was selected as one of only 110 films accepted for participation out of 4,600 submissions from different countries around the world.
Abu Bakr explained that the festival, which is celebrating its 26th edition this year, is not limited to feature-length films but also includes competitions for short films, documentaries, television series, animated films, and educational videos, provided they have a strong connection to scientific topics.
“Sea of Hope” portrays the tragedies and devastating consequences of wars from the perspective of civilians caught in the midst of conflicts, with a particular focus on the psychological and physical impacts of forced displacement.
The film also documents the journeys of people who were forced to flee their homes and risk their lives along perilous routes where death and drowning threaten them at every crossing in their search for safety and a dignified life.
The international festival in Australia is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with events and screenings continuing for 18 days.
