The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens to leave Iraq immediately, warning of escalating security tensions across the Middle East and the possibility of sudden developments that could affect travel and regional security.

In a security alert issued on Thursday, 23 July 2026, the embassy said the security environment in the Middle East remains volatile and could deteriorate without warning. It advised U.S. citizens to remain vigilant, prepare for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and disruptions to regional travel.

The embassy added that several airlines have postponed the resumption of scheduled flights, while others have canceled certain routes, urging travelers to check their flight status and stay in contact with their airlines for updates.

It also noted that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including some outside the Middle East, have recently been targeted, warning that Iran and Iran-backed groups could carry out additional attacks against American interests abroad, including U.S. businesses and institutions.

The embassy further advised U.S. citizens outside the Middle East to reconsider travel to the region or transit through it and to closely monitor airline and official travel updates.
