Kurdish National Council Calls for Urgent Review of Wheat Pricing

May 18 2026

ARK News.. The Kurdish National Council (KNC) has called on the Syrian government to urgently reconsider wheat purchasing prices for the current season in a manner that reflects the real costs of production and guarantees a fair profit margin for farmers.

In a statement issued on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the council said the current wheat pricing policy fails to meet the minimum rights of farmers, who have endured significant burdens throughout the season amid difficult economic and living conditions.

The council stressed that the announced wheat price is unfair, inconsistent with the current economic reality, and does not reflect the scale of hardship and losses suffered by farmers.

Statement Text:

The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria is following with deep concern the wheat purchasing price for the current season, approved by the Ministry of Economy in the Syrian Interim Government, which came below the real costs of agricultural production and does not meet the minimum rights of farmers who have borne heavy burdens during this season amid difficult economic and living conditions.

The sharp rise in fuel, fertilizer, and seed prices, in addition to transportation costs and labor wages, has turned agriculture into a heavy burden for farmers at a time when this segment should have been receiving support and care as the main pillar of food security and the national economy.

The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council believes that the announced pricing is unjust and inconsistent with the current economic reality, and does not reflect the scale of suffering and losses endured by farmers.

This threatens the future of the agricultural sector and pushes many farmers to abandon the cultivation of strategic crops, foremost among them wheat.

Accordingly, we demand the following:

An urgent review of wheat purchasing prices in line with the real costs of production and a fair profit margin for farmers.

The adoption of economic and agricultural policies that support the agricultural sector and reduce burdens on farmers.

The provision of agricultural production supplies at suitable and subsidized prices.

Protecting farmers from exploitative and excessive collection policies that increase their suffering and worsen their living crises.

Supporting farmers and protecting the agricultural sector is a national and moral responsibility that cannot be ignored, because preserving agricultural production means preserving food security and social and economic stability in the country.
