President Barzani Discusses Developments in Syria with the British Ambassador
ARK News.. President Masoud Barzani discussed the situation in Syria and the latest regional developments with the British Ambassador to Iraq, Irfan Siddiq.
The meeting took place on Monday, February 2, 2026, in Pirmam, and was attended by Andrew Beasley, the British Consul General in Erbil.
The discussions also covered the latest political developments in Iraq, ongoing efforts to form a new government, and the process of appointing the President of the Republic of Iraq.
President Barzani emphasized that the presidency of Iraq is a constitutional entitlement of the Kurdish people, stressing the need to establish an appropriate mechanism for the election and nomination of a presidential candidate.
He noted that such a framework is essential to ensuring stability in Iraq’s political process following elections.
Regarding the position of the Iraqi prime minister, President Barzani explained that this post is an entitlement of the Shiite community and that the issue must be resolved internally.
Other topics discussed during the meeting included the situation in Syria, the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces, the peace process in Turkey, and broader regional tensions.
