UN Security Council to Vote on Lifting Sanctions on Al-Sharaa and Khattab
ARK News.. The United States has called for a vote at the UN Security Council to remove Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab from the list of international sanctions linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
According to Al Jazeera, a diplomatic source noted that the U.S. made certain amendments to the draft resolution, particularly regarding foreign fighters. The revised text does not include China’s proposal for one-year renewable exemptions.
The source added that China also proposed amendments to mention foreign fighters explicitly in the draft resolution.
The U.S. has expressed to some council members its desire to conduct the vote before President al-Sharaa’s upcoming visit to Washington, where he is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump next Monday.
Trump previously announced the lifting of sanctions on Damascus during his speech at the Saudi-American Investment Forum in Riyadh in May, a move welcomed by the Syrian government and several Arab states.
