Germany Urges Syrian Government to Hold Free Elections in Hasakah and Suwayda

ARK News.. German Foreign Minister Johann Vadevoll said that Syria has a genuine opportunity to become one of the region’s key countries, stressing the need for accountability over the violations committed in coastal and southern regions, particularly Suwayda.

During a press conference held on Thursday in Damascus, Minister Vadevoll stated, “Germany has stood firmly against Assad’s crimes,” adding that in his talks with the Syrian government, he emphasized the Syrian people’s right to live in dignity. He also called on Damascus to hold free elections in the provinces of Hasakah and Suwayda.
The German minister noted that Berlin still considers “counterterrorism a top priority,” and said that Syria “should serve as a model in this regard.” He further revealed that Germany has supported lifting certain sanctions on Syria.
Highlighting what he described as a “special relationship” between the two nations, Vadevoll said that Syrian refugees in Germany “have served as a humanitarian and cultural bridge between the two countries.”
He concluded by announcing that he has extended an official invitation to Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani to visit Berlin in the near future.
