Al-Sharaa: Rebuilding Syria Will Require Between $600 and $900 Billion
ARK News.. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa affirmed that Syria’s stability represents a “historic opportunity” for the entire region, stressing that the world will ultimately benefit from the country’s new postwar reality.
In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes”, President al-Sharaa recalled his first entry into the presidential palace once occupied by ousted president Bashar al-Assad, describing the moment as deeply unsettling: “A great evil emerged from this palace against the Syrian people,” he said.
Al-Sharaa noted that the Syrian people endured immense losses throughout the brutal years of war, saying that “every room in the destroyed buildings carries memories of those who once lived there.” He emphasized that entire generations have suffered profound psychological trauma, and that the fall of Assad’s regime gave Syrians “new hope to return home and rebuild their country.”
The president estimated that reconstruction efforts will require between $600 and $900 billion, underscoring that this process cannot succeed without international support.
He criticized the international community’s failure to stop Syria’s 14-year tragedy, stating that “the world must now help Syria, and anyone obstructing the lifting of sanctions is complicit in the crime.”
Al-Sharaa reaffirmed his government’s commitment to holding accountable all those responsible for crimes against civilians, regardless of affiliation. In response to a question about recent abuses in the coastal region, he said the government would use every legal mechanism available to pursue the prosecution of Bashar al-Assad.
The president also discussed the extraordinary process by which the People’s Assembly was formed, explaining that general elections will be held once the country’s infrastructure is rebuilt and citizens’ documents are restored, stressing that Syria must become a nation “where every individual has the right to
