ARK News.. On Saturday, October 11, 2025, marked the 33rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Peshmerga fighter Ali Omar Khalil, who was killed by PKK militants.
His Life and Struggle
Ali Omar Khalil was born on January 1, 1972, into a patriotic family from Rihanike village, near Derik in Syrian Kurdistan. He began his schooling in 1978 but was forced to leave a few years later to help his father with work.
Determined to join the Kurdish liberation movement, he traveled with a group of his comrades to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where they joined the Peshmerga forces. In 1991, he became part of the Akre Force, later joining the Kurdistan Front in Zakho, and a year afterward, he was assigned to the 9th Brigade (Second Force) in Semele, participating in numerous battles there.
On October 11, 1992, during an attack by PKK militants on the Peshmerga and governmental institutions of the Kurdistan Region, Ali Omar Khalil was martyred in Bahnina, near Shabanki Fortress in the Zakho district, while defending the legitimacy of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament and Government.
The Syrian regime refused to allow his body to be returned to Syrian Kurdistan, and he was laid to rest in Semele, Duhok province, in a solemn ceremony attended by large crowds.
His brother, Saeed Omar, later followed in his footsteps, joining the Peshmerga ranks. He now serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria (PDK-S) and heads the party’s Office of National Relations.
