Syrian Democratic Forces Transfer Nearly 50 French Nationals to Iraq
ARK News.. A U.S. news agency reported that Iraqi authorities have received 47 French citizens who were previously detained in northeastern Syria on suspicion of belonging to the ISIS terrorist organization, ahead of their trial.
The Associated Press quoted three Iraqi security officials as saying, “The French citizens will be referred to the Iraqi judiciary to face terrorism-related charges.”
The French nationals had been held at a detention center in northeastern Syria under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), along with about 9,000 others accused of being affiliated with ISIS, before being transferred to Iraq roughly six weeks ago without an official announcement.
The agency has not yet obtained comments from French officials regarding the transfer.
According to Iraqi officials, the SDF has handed over a total of 3,192 prisoners to Iraq, of whom 724 were sentenced to death and 1,381 received life sentences.
