Kurdistan Region President Calls on Iraqi Government to Compensate Victims of the Anfal Genocide
ARK News.. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement on the 37th anniversary of the Anfal campaign in Badinan, urging the Iraqi federal government to compensate the victims of the Anfal genocide and all victims of the former regime’s crimes.
Full text of the statement:
On the 37th anniversary of the Badinan Anfal, we pay tribute with reverence to the martyrs of Badinan and Kurdistan as a whole. On this solemn occasion, the burial today of a number of victims in the Bari Gara area, following the completion of legal and forensic procedures, once again reflects the injustice endured by our people.
The Badinan Anfal was yet another chapter in the series of crimes committed by the then-Iraqi authorities against the people of Kurdistan. Between August 25 and September 6, 1988, during the final phase of the Anfal operations, civilians, land, air, and the environment in Badinan were all targeted.
On this anniversary, we reiterate our call on the Iraqi federal government to compensate the victims of the Badinan Anfal and all victims of the former Iraqi regime. The Iraqi High Tribunal has ruled that the Anfal operations constitute genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Accordingly, it is the rightful due of the victims to receive compensation in every form.
Iraq’s painful past has brought nothing but destruction and devastation to the country and its people. The Anfal campaign, and all other crimes committed against the people of Kurdistan, must serve as lessons and reminders of the need to guarantee the rights of all communities in Kurdistan.
On this anniversary, we reaffirm the importance of resolving disputes, fostering peaceful coexistence, safeguarding the country’s security and stability, and ensuring joint efforts among all political parties and communities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region so that together we may build a better present and future.
Glory to the pure souls of the martyrs of the Badinan Anfal and all martyrs of Kurdistan.
