Germany Sentences Syrian Doctor Alaa Musa to Life Imprisonment
ARK News.. A German court on Monday sentenced Syrian doctor Alaa Musa to life in prison for torturing opponents of ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, following a lengthy trial that lasted over three years in Frankfurt.
Musa, who arrived in Germany in 2015 and worked as an orthopedic surgeon, was arrested in 2020 after being identified by fellow Syrian refugees who testified that he had worked in military hospitals in Damascus and Homs.
The Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt began his trial in January 2022, holding 186 sessions and hearing testimony from around 50 witnesses, victims, and legal experts.
Musa, referred to in court as Alaa M. in accordance with German privacy laws, was accused of torturing anti-Assad detainees while working at a military prison and hospitals in Homs and Damascus between 2011 and 2012.
