More Than 1.2 Billion People Worldwide Live in Extreme Poverty
ARK News.. The latest data released by the World Bank, coinciding with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, has highlighted the dire conditions threatening the lives of hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
According to the World Bank, more than 1.2 billion people, equivalent to 14.45% of the global population, live in extreme poverty, surviving on no more than $3 a day.
The data also revealed a stark humanitarian dimension: children account for nearly half of those affected, totaling 617 million and placing the future of entire generations at risk.
Sub-Saharan Africa tops the list of the hardest-hit regions, with a deprivation rate of 43.3%, followed by the Middle East at 14.5%.
The figures also show that poverty remains predominantly a rural phenomenon, with 83% of people living in poverty concentrated in remote areas and villages.
The World Bank called on the international community to take urgent, tangible measures to support vulnerable populations and develop infrastructure in the areas most severely affected.
