UK Welcomes Syrian Cooperation with OPCW
ARK News.. The United Kingdom has welcomed the Syrian government’s recent commitment to cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), describing it as a positive step toward turning a new page in Syria’s history.
In a statement posted on the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s official X account, the UK government said:
“The United Kingdom welcomes the Syrian government’s strong commitment to turning the page on the past and its determination to ensure the full dismantlement of the Assad-era chemical weapons program.”
The statement also highlighted the operational and logistical support provided by Syria to facilitate recent OPCW visits, as well as Damascus’s declared willingness to engage with the international community on this issue.
Earlier this week, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, praised Syria’s cooperation during her briefing to the UN Security Council. She noted that Syrian authorities have shown full and transparent collaboration with the OPCW and its Technical Secretariat.
Nakamitsu revealed that a team of technical experts from the OPCW visited Damascus in March to begin preparations for establishing a permanent presence in Syria and to plan joint missions to chemical weapons sites.
The developments come amid renewed international efforts to resolve long-standing concerns surrounding Syria’s chemical weapons program and to ensure full compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention.
