Nearly 2 Million Displaced Persons and Refugees Return to Their Areas in Syria

ARK News.. The United Nations has announced that 16.5 million people in Syria remain in need of humanitarian assistance and protection, while more than one million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and over half a million refugees from neighboring countries have returned to their areas of origin.

Speaking virtually from Gaziantep, Turkey, during the UN Office in Geneva’s weekly press briefing, Ideem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated:
“In Syria, 16.5 million people need humanitarian aid and protection. Population movements and displacements are ongoing.”

Wosornu added:
“Over one million internally displaced persons have returned to their communities, along with more than half a million refugees from neighboring countries.”

Despite increasing challenges on the ground, Wosornu emphasized that humanitarian operations continue:
“The United Nations and its partners are reaching an average of 2.4 million people every month through in-country and cross-border operations.”
