Ibrahim Biro: Kurds Cannot Continue Operating Outside the Framework of the Syrian

ARK News.. A member of the External Relations Committee of the Kurdish National Council (KNC), Ibrahim Biro, stated that the PKK’s announcement to abandon armed struggle after decades of conflict marks a historic turning point across the regions affected by the group’s activities—particularly in Kurdish areas of Syria.

Speaking to BasNews, Biro said:

“The PKK’s decision to lay down its arms is a positive step, especially since there is no longer any justification for its affiliated structures in Syria to continue their militarized approach.”

He pointed out that weapons were used as a tool to impose de facto authority over the Kurdish people, leading to divisions, tensions, and even serious violations—including the recruitment and abduction of children, and monopolization of political, economic, and security decisions.

“These practices have harmed the Kurdish cause more than they have helped it,” Biro said. “They have damaged the image of that cause, both domestically and internationally.”

Biro added:

“Today, with the new administration in Damascus regaining its legitimacy on the regional, Arab, and international levels, it has become essential for Syrian Kurdish forces to actively engage in the national dialogue. Kurds cannot continue operating outside the political framework of the state or rely on military options.”

He emphasized that the abandonment of armed struggle, if accompanied by a mature political vision and a clear understanding of the new reality, could serve as a valuable opportunity to transition the Kurdish issue into the realm of politics.

“This would allow the Kurdish cause to move forward within a national political project that ensures the constitutional recognition of the rights of the Kurdish people,” he concluded.
