Iraqi MP Mahma Khalil: Official Steps to Turn Sinjar into a Province to Begin Soon
ARK News.. Iraqi Member of Parliament Mahma Khalil announced that the Iraqi Parliament will soon initiate formal procedures to transform the Sinjar district (Shingal) into an independent province, following the final ratification of Halabja’s status as a governorate.
Khalil stated that all efforts in the coming period will be directed toward launching the necessary steps for Sinjar’s administrative upgrade, noting that a comprehensive plan has been developed and is being seriously pursued within the Iraqi Parliament.
“Sinjar is fully qualified in every aspect to become a province,” Khalil said, stressing the need for official support from the federal government in Baghdad to achieve this goal in response to the demands of the region’s residents.
The MP also highlighted that the people of Sinjar have repeatedly called for their district to be recognized as a province within the Kurdistan Region. He recalled that over 90% of Sinjar’s population voted in favor of Kurdistan’s independence during the 2017 referendum.
Khalil emphasized that advancing this initiative represents both an administrative and service-related entitlement for the people of Sinjar, who have long endured neglect, as well as severe security and social challenges.
