Sudani: Presence of Ahmad al-Sharaa at Baghdad Arab Summit is Highly Significant

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani affirmed on Friday that the presence of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the upcoming Arab League Summit in Baghdad is of great importance, emphasizing that al-Sharaa’ represents the Syrian state regardless of how the transition of power occurred.

Speaking to reporters on May 2, 2025, al-Sudani stated, “Hosting the summit in the Iraqi capital is significant, as it reflects Iraq’s active regional role, grounded in its balanced positions and its commitment to addressing key regional issues.”

He added that Iraq will be a proactive player at the summit and will present solutions to various crises in the region.

Al-Sudani clarified that the invitation extended to the Syrian president followed the standard protocol of the Arab League, stressing that al-Sharaa’s participation is vital for conveying the vision of the “new Syria,” particularly amid ongoing Arab efforts to help Syria overcome its ordeal.

He further emphasized that “Syria’s security is an integral part of Iraq’s national security,” and called for clear, unified stances to help stabilize Syria and address its challenges, especially on the security front.

The Iraqi Prime Minister also issued a warning regarding the presence and growing activity of ISIS militants in Syrian territory, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated regional action.
