ARK News.. Britain has confirmed that its decision to amend its sanctions regime on Syria is intended to assist in rebuilding the country and its economy, enhance support for the Syrian people, and ensure accountability for the Assad regime and its associates.

In a statement, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "The updates to the Syria sanctions regulations will help the Syrian people rebuild their country and economy after the fall of Assad."

The Foreign Office emphasized that "ensuring long-term stability in Syria is vital for both regional and British security, and forms a cornerstone of the government's plan for change."

The statement added that "the Syrian financial system will be supported to reopen and rebuild following Assad’s fall," noting that the UK government is adjusting its sanctions regulations on Syria and lifting sanctions on 12 entities.

The updated legislation will also "enable the UK to hold Assad and his partners accountable for their horrific actions against the Syrian people, while maintaining the ability to impose future sanctions in the Syrian context if necessary," the statement said.

Additionally, the UK announced the lifting of sanctions on 12 entities, including Syria’s Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, the General Intelligence Directorate, and various media companies. However, sanctions will remain in place against members of the Assad regime and individuals involved in the illicit Captagon trade.

The Foreign Office stressed that these amendments "will support Syria’s transition into a more stable and prosperous country and enhance both regional and UK security, in line with the government’s change plan."
