Ahmad al-Shari’ Approves New Constitutional Declaration
ARK News.. Syrian President Ahmad al-Shari’ has approved the new constitutional declaration on Thursday, March 13, 2025, which was drafted by the Constitutional Declaration Drafting Committee. This move aims to establish a new legal framework for Syria's transitional phase.
The committee confirmed that the declaration draws its legitimacy from the desire to build a new Syria while retaining the name of the state as the "Syrian Arab Republic." The declaration also specifies that the president’s religion is Islam, and that Islamic jurisprudence remains a primary source of legislation.
The constitutional declaration emphasizes the protection of basic freedoms, including freedom of speech, expression, the press, media, and publishing. It also affirms property rights and women's rights to participate in work and education.
On the political front, the declaration grants the People’s Assembly the authority to summon and question ministers. It also leaves the matter of removing the president or reducing his powers to the Assembly itself. The declaration also calls for the dissolution of the current Constitutional Court and the implementation of a five-year transitional phase.
Regarding emergency situations, the declaration stresses that the declaration of a state of emergency must be approved by the National Security Council, and any extension of it would require approval by the People’s Assembly.
This declaration is part of the ongoing restructuring of Syria’s constitutional and legal system, focusing on providing a suitable foundation for political transition amid the ongoing changes in the country.
