
Nechirvan Barzani and Mikhail Bogdanov Reaffirm Support for Kurdish Rights in Syria
ARK News.. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Russian President’s Special Envoy and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed the threat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, emphasizing the need forjoint efforts to combat terrorism.
President Barzani received, on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Bogdanov and his accompanying delegation in Erbil, where they discussed Russia’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad ties, Russian investment in Kurdistan, the situation in Syria, and recent developments in the Middle East.
President Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to strengthening ties with Russia, highlighting the role of Russian companies, particularly in the energy sector. He also expressed gratitude for Russia’s support during challenging times in the Kurdistan Region.
The discussions also touched on maintaining stability and security in Iraq. Both sides expressed their support for ongoing efforts to resolve outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Additionally, the meeting covered the results of the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections and future plans for forming the next government.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and the protection of Kurdish and minority rights in Syria. They also discussed ISIS threats in Iraq and Syria and the necessity of joint counterterrorism efforts.
Furthermore, the two sides underscored the importance of strengthening relations between Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and regional countries, exchanging views on key regional and international issues.
