German Parliament approves extension of German army mission in Iraq
ARK News.. The German Parliament approved the extension of the German Army mission mandate to contribute to achieving stability in Iraq for an additional 15 months.
According to the German News Agency, the German Parliament voted, on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in favour of the extension by a large majority of 539 members of present parliament, while 93 members of parliament voted against the extension, and two members of parliament abstained, according to what the parliament presidency announced after taking the vote by name.
According to the decision, the German government can continue to send up to 500 soldiers from the army to Iraq.
The German army supports Iraq in areas including training soldiers, and then contributing to combating the return of ISIS again.
The new mandate continues until January 31, 2026, which provides the mission with an additional period of 4 months after the parliamentary elections in Germany, scheduled to be held in late September 2025.
