Statement by the Kurdish National Council on the wheat price set by the PYD administration

May 28 2024

ARK News… The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria, on Sunday, May 26, 2024, issued a statement about the wheat pricing set by the PYD administration, calling on international bodies concerned with stability in Syria to put pressure on the PYD administration to reconsider this unfair pricing.

Below is the text of the statement:
The Kurdish National Council expresses its strong condemnation of the PYD administration’s announcement of a low price to purchase this season’s wheat crop, which was set at 31 cents and issued, May 26, while the regime announced its readiness to purchase at 36 cents, which inflicts heavy losses on farmers and threatens food security in the region.

The Kurdish National Council sees this unfair pricing as tyrannical and imposed by the PYD administration and underestimating the interests of the people, without taking into account their tragic conditions and difficult circumstances, as it forces farmers to sell their crops at a price much lower than the cost of production, without any alternative options.

In addition, this pricing comes at a time when the wheat season is exposed to difficult weather conditions that negatively affected productivity, which increases the suffering of farmers and peasants and threatens to exacerbate the food crisis and living burdens.

These practices force many farmers to leave their lands and emigrate, in search of better opportunities elsewhere, which poses a real threat to the future of agriculture in the region. The decision sparked angry reactions, as a result of which demonstrations and sit-ins took place in some cities on the island denouncing it and demanding that this be reconsidered. Unfair action.

As a result of the above, the Kurdish National Council calls on the international bodies concerned with stability in Syria to put pressure on the PYD administration to reconsider this unfair pricing and set a fair price that is commensurate with the cost of production and guarantees a profit margin for farmers and peasants.

We also demand that farmers receive better prices and are encouraged to continue production.

We stress the need to respect the rights of farmers and peasants and protect them from any exploitation or injustice, and we stress the importance of supporting the agricultural sector by international bodies that provide aid to the Syrian people, ensure food security and achieve stability in the region.
