ARK News… Members of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday observed a minute's silence for the victims of the deadly earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.

In a statement, UN General Assembly President Chapa Kurosi expressed his deep condolences to the governments and people of Turkey and Syria for the tragic loss of life and damage.

He called on member states to stand and observe a minute of silence, before starting a session in the 193-member General Assembly.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply saddened" by the heavy loss of life in Turkey and Syria.

"My heart goes out to the people of Turkey and Syria at this tragic hour," Guterres said in a statement.

He continued, "I send my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and I wish a speedy recovery for the injured," stressing the commitment of the United Nations to provide support and response to these disasters.

"Our teams are on the ground assessing needs and providing assistance," he continued.

In the context, the Secretary-General of the United Nations called on the international community to help the thousands of families affected by the disaster, many of whom were already in dire need of humanitarian assistance in hard-to-reach areas.
