Nechirvan Barzani on the targeting of Erbil: "A dangerous precedent and a flagrant violation"

ARK News... Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani strongly condemned the ballistic missile attack which targeted Erbil in early hours on Sunday, saying it was an “alarming development”.

“We strongly condemn the cowardly and unwarranted missile attack that targeted the people, peace, and stability of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region late last night,” Barzani wrote in a statement.

“Fortunately, there were no casualties. We stand with the great people of Erbil as they spent a worrisome and stressful night. Countering threats and menaces require unity and cooperation among all parties and communities of Kurdistan,” the president added.

He stressed that the attack and the repetition of such actions were a blatant violation of the peace, stability, and sovereignty of Iraq which will only exacerbate the situation and harm Iraq’s interests and future.

“I urge the federal government of Iraq and the international community to end such aggressions and do their best to prevent further violations of the sovereignty and stability of the country, and the security and peace of its citizens,” Barzani added.

At around 01:00 am on Sunday, massive explosions were heard across Erbil. Official statements soon confirmed multiple rockets had hit the areas around the new compound of the United States Consulate General.

Kurdistan Region’s Interior Ministry and Counter-Terrorism Service both confirmed in separate statements that 12 ballistic missiles were fired at Erbil in the direction of the US Consulate General.

The missiles came from the east, outside the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, the statements added.
