Jamal Eminki, Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Ministry, explained in a statement that the incident took place in an area between Khalifa and Bekhma, in Soran district, northeast of Erbil.
The PKK gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint of the Peshmerga forces and that the Peshmerga fighters responded to the attack with initial reports of possible casualties, he added.
The Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga explained, "The Peshmerga forces have previously been subjected to many attacks and attacks by PKK gunmen in various places within the region. These unjustified attacks resulted in casualties and injuries among the ranks of the Peshmerga forces."
The PKK caused the evacuation of more than 300 Kurdish villages from Zakho to the Balakayati area, in addition to giving the Turkish forces a pretext for military intervention inside the regions of the Kurdistan Region.
Eminki further warned that the Peshmerga forces would respond to any attacks by the PKK gunmen.
This is not the first time that the PKK carries out such attacks on the Peshmerga forces in different areas of the Kurdistan Region, particularly in Erbil and Duhok provinces, lately.
There have been casualties as a result of previous attacks on the Peshmerga fighters by the PKK.
