ARK News… Top Kurdish officials, political leaders, minority representatives, and foreign diplomats gathered in Erbil on Wednesday to discuss ways to foster unity and build Kurdistan Region’s first Constitution.

The conference, hosted by the University of Kurdistan-Erbil and entitled “Kurdistan Region of Iraq: Unity and Constitution”, was attended by President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, UN Secretary-General Special Envoy for Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and many other senior officials.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani delivered a speech during the conference in which he emphasized that greater achievements are always possible through greater unity, for which all the political parties are responsible.

“Unity is not just a concept, it requires hard work and dialogue to find a common goal,” PM Barzani said. “We must come together; understand each other’s needs and concerns, and agree on a common agenda based on national interests.”

He shed light on the autonomy of Kurdistan in 1991, arguing that it could have not been possible without the internal unity of the Kurds. He also noted that the recently passed budget law of Iraq in which the share of the Kurdistan Region is secured was made possible after all the Kurdish political factions came together to fight for the financial dues of the Kurdistan Region.

“Our constitution must reflect our people's needs, rights, and aspirations and be rooted in the values dear to all of us — coexistence, freedom, and individual protections.”
