Statistics Office in Germany: Two million asylum seekers, half of them Syrians in Germany
ARK News… The Federal Statistics Office of Germany announced on Thursday that the number of asylum seekers in Germany who are seeking protection from wars or persecution in their homes increased at the end of last year to more than 1.8 million people.
The office pointed out at its headquarters in Wiesbaden, western Germany, that this increase of 3 percent is the lowest increase in the number of asylum seekers since 2012, pointing out that those seeking protection are foreigners who reside in Germany based on reasons related to international law or humanitarian reasons or Political.
The office pointed out that among these people were about 266 thousand people with an unspecified protection status until the end of last year, meaning that their asylum request had not been decided, and Syria was a basic country of origin for these refugees, with the proportion of refugees coming from them reaching 41%, and then Afghanistan by 11 percent, then Iraq by 10 percent.
According to the data, the number of such persons without a specific protection status decreased by nearly 13 percent compared to 2018. The office explained that this decrease is due to the work on pending asylum procedures as well as the decrease in the number of applications again.
The office added that 1.36 million people out of the total seekers of protection in Germany have recognized protection status, and this number exceeds what was monitored in 2018 by 6 percent, and the Federal Statistical Office indicated that the recognized protection status is a time-limited situation in 80 percent of cases.
Moreover, 213,000 asylum-seekers lived in Germany last year, whose asylum application was rejected or they lost their protection status, according to data from the Federal Statistics Office.
