Michel Aoun: The war in Syria is over and refugees must return to their homes
ARK News.. The Lebanese President, Michel Aoun, asked the Syrian refugees to return to their country, because the war ended in their areas, stressing his country's right to compensation from the countries that ignited the war in Syria, which cost them 25 billion dollars.
This came during a special interview with the French magazine, on Saturday, saying that "the current suffering that Lebanon is experiencing exceeds the capacity of major countries to bear it."
Aoun said that the economic crisis in Lebanon "was further aggravated by the large number of displaced Syrians, which exceeded our ability to bear it, and their number with Palestinian refugees today constitutes about half of the population of Lebanon."
The Lebanese president rejected exceptional aid, calling on the countries that "ignited the war in Syria as part of the $ 25 billion, which Lebanon incurred as a result of the war and the Syrian exodus, according to estimates by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank."
Michel Aoun insisted that many of the "problems we are experiencing today are the result of the current Syrian situation." Western countries do not even allow direct negotiations with the aim of returning the displaced Syrians to their homes, after the end of the war in their safe areas.
It is worth mentioning that, at the end of 2017, the United Nations estimated the number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon at about 997 thousand, while the population of Lebanon according to official statistics is 4.5 million, and the United Nations believes that the security and humanitarian conditions are not conducive to their return, that is contrary to what the president of Lebanon went in his interview.
