ARK News: The papal ambassador to Damascus, Cardinal Mario Zinari, said on Monday that what is happening in Syria is the biggest humanitarian disaster after World War II.

This comes, the day after Pope Francis launched an appeal to stop the fighting in northeastern Syria, saying on Sunday that "his mind is heading again towards the Middle East, especially beloved and tormented Syria."

Pope Francis spoke of "the tragic news from Syria about the fate of people in the northeast, who are forced to leave their homes because of military operations," pointing to "the presence of a large number of Christian families among them."

Pope Francis said he "renews his appeal to all concerned parties and the international community to ensure that everyone is genuinely, fairly and transparently committed to dialogue in search of viable solutions."
