Pederson discusses with Zarif the developments of the Constitutional Committee in Tehran
ARK News; The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pederson, paid a visit to Iran, during which he met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif.
The UN mission to Syria through its official Twitter account said that Pederson visited Tehran on Tuesday, September 3, to discuss the latest developments of the Syrian constitutional committee.
The mission described that the meeting with Pederson and Zarif was as a "fruitful working meeting", at a time when the UN envoy is working to "finalize" the formation of the constitutional committee, according to the mission.
The mission quoted from Pederson as saying, "I am working to finalize the formation of the Constitutional Commission in line with Security Council resolution 2254. There is a need for a political solution, the violence in Syria must stop."
The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pederson, confirmed the start of the work of the Syrian Constitutional Commission "soon", and said during a briefing to the UN Security Council, on August 30, that the committee may be formed before the end of September.
Pederson said during the briefing that the problem of the six names has been resolved, and it was agreed to appoint two heads of the Constitutional Committee, one representative of the Syrian regime and the other representative of the Opposition, without specifying the names of candidates for the task.
It is scheduled to be Pederson's visit to Damascus soon, during which he will meet officials of the Syrian regime, and it was also announced a visit to Washington soon, to discuss the "final" developments of the Constitutional Commission.
