ARK News: Kurdish prominent political leader and the president of ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, said that the root causes which led to the emergence of Islamic State (IS) are not yet addressed in Iraq and in the region as a whole.

During a meeting with Olivier Decottignies, the new French Consul General in Erbil, Barzani said that without addressing the root causes of IS emergence, the threat of the group’s terror would continue.

On the relations between Erbil and Paris, the Kurdish leader said there is no limit for further developing the bilateral ties. He also thanked the French government and people for standing with Kurdistan during the hard times of its battle against terrorism.

The former president of Kurdistan Region reasserted his concern over the future of Kurds in Syria. Discussing the current situation in the neighboring country, Barzani said he supports the initiative by President Emmanuel Macron for the Syrian crisis.

The French consul general also highlighted the good relations between Erbil and Paris, saying that security and stability of the Kurdistan Region are of significant importance to France.

Decottignies also explained that his country welcomes the improvements in the ties between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government of Iraq.
