A balloon to monitor immigrants over the Turkish-Greek coasts

ARK News: In a move to combat illegal immigration, the European frontier agency Frontex and the Greek Coast Guard are planning to launch an unmanned balloon to monitor the European maritime border with Turkey.

The plane, which began on Tuesday (July 30th), its mission is to monitor the narrow corridor that separates the Greek island of Samos from the Turkish coast.

The balloon is intended mainly to combat the illegal activity of human traffickers and to search for illegal immigrants.

For its part, Greece said on Monday that the balloon is equipped with surveillance equipment and thermal cameras which allows directly of the transfer of information to the coast guard vessels patrolling the waters off the island of “Samos.”
