Guterres: Syria’s Future Goes Beyond Political Transition
ARK News.. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated in a press release that Syria’s future “extends far beyond a political transition,” describing it as an opportunity to rebuild shattered communities, heal deep divisions, and create a country where every Syrian — regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or political affiliation — can live in safety, equality, and dignity.
According to the UN News Service, Guterres stressed that while the challenges remain immense, they are not insurmountable. He noted that the past year has demonstrated the possibility of real change when Syrians are empowered and supported to lead the transition themselves.
The Secretary-General highlighted the active role Syrian communities are playing in shaping governance structures for the country’s future, as well as the continued leadership of Syrian women in advancing justice and equality.
On the humanitarian front, Guterres acknowledged that needs across Syria remain vast, but pointed to notable progress in restoring basic services, expanding humanitarian access, facilitating returns for refugees and internally displaced people, and advancing efforts to establish transitional justice mechanisms and strengthen civic participation — all essential components of a future that is inclusive and accountable.
Guterres called on the international community to “stand firmly behind this Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transition,” emphasizing respect for Syria’s sovereignty, removing obstacles to reconstruction, funding humanitarian appeals, supporting economic development, and ensuring that the benefits of transition reach the Syrian people in tangible ways.
He concluded by reaffirming the UN’s commitment to supporting Syrians in achieving their desired transition: “On this anniversary, we stand united in our goal of building the foundations of peace and prosperity, and we renew our commitment to a free, sovereign, unified, and inclusive Syria.”
