Over 7,000 Schools Destroyed as Syria Faces Major Education Crisis
ARK News.. As the new academic year begins, Syria’s Ministry of Education has confirmed the scale of destruction facing the country’s education sector, with thousands of schools still lying in ruins.
According to the state news agency SANA, Mohammad al-Hannoun, Director of School Buildings at the Ministry, said the ministry faces “enormous challenges at the start of every school year, including time constraints and difficult conditions, which add pressure to secure a safe learning environment and enough seating for students.”
Al-Hannoun revealed that more than 7,000 schools remain in urgent need of intervention, particularly in Idlib and its countryside, rural Hama, Daraa, Deir Ez-Zour, southern Aleppo, and Homs.
He further stated that nearly 60% of the existing schools require rehabilitation due to damage or aging infrastructure. Many towns and villages still lack schools entirely as a result of widespread destruction to educational facilities during years of conflict.
