Trump Pushes for Meeting Between Ahmad al-Sharaa and Benjamin Netanyahu
ARK News.. Israeli political sources have revealed that the U.S.-brokered negotiations between Syria and Israel are unlikely to produce a comprehensive peace agreement at this stage.
According to a report published by Yedioth Ahronoth, sources in Tel Aviv said that the prospect of achieving full peace has fallen through for now, as Israel insists on retaining the Golan Heights — a demand firmly rejected by the Syrian government.
Instead, the discussions are reportedly focused on a Declaration of Principles outlining a series of security understandings based on the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. The key points under consideration include:
Establishing a demilitarized zone on the Syrian side, stretching from south of Damascus to the Jordanian border and the Golan, prohibiting the Syrian army from deploying heavy weaponry there.
A Syrian commitment to prevent any Iranian presence within its territory.
Israeli withdrawal from certain areas seized following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, while retaining strategic positions it deems vital for security, particularly on Mount Hermon and the eastern Golan.
Formation of a joint military coordination team to address security challenges.
An Israeli pledge not to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs and to guarantee the safety of the Druze community in Sweida and other areas.
The report further disclosed that U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to arrange a direct meeting between Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the two leaders would sign the proposed security understandings.
