Al-Shaibani in Washington to Discuss Lifting Remaining U.S. Sanctions on Syria
ARK News.. A U.S. senator has confirmed that Syria’s foreign minister will visit Washington for a series of meetings with the U.S. Senate aimed at securing the permanent lifting of remaining sanctions on Syria.
The American news site Axios quoted Senator Lindsey Graham as saying that Syrian Foreign Minister and Expatriates Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani will meet with U.S. lawmakers in Washington to discuss permanently removing sanctions imposed under laws such as the Caesar Act.
Graham added that he and other senators are scheduled to meet Al-Shaibani today, Thursday, September 18, 2025, to discuss the targeted sanctions.
According to Axios, al-Shaibani is also expected to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio tomorrow, Friday.
This marks the first official visit by a Syrian foreign minister to Washington in over 25 years. The last visit was in 1999, when then–Foreign Minister Farouq al-Sharaa met with U.S. officials for peace talks with Israel.
