Aug 21 2025

ARK News.. Syrian President for the Transitional Phase, Ahmad al-Sharaa, has approved the temporary electoral system for the People’s Assembly.

Al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 143 of 2025 on Wednesday, which sets out the provisional system for People’s Assembly elections in Syria. Syria is expected to hold its first parliamentary election under the new administration in September.

According to the electoral system, the People’s Assembly will consist of 210 members, of whom 140 will be elected by electoral bodies formed in governorate constituencies based on demographic and administrative distribution, while al-Sharaa will appoint 70 members.

One of the main conditions of the electoral system is that candidates must have obtained Syrian citizenship prior to May 1, 2011.

This includes Kurdish citizens in the Jazira region of Syrian Kurdistan, who were granted Syrian nationality in 2011 under Decree No. 49, thereby giving them the right to participate in the elections.
