Nechirvan Barzani and UN Envoy Mohammed al-Hassan Discuss Regional Developments
ARK News.. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mohammed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of the United Nations mission in Iraq, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the meeting focused on political developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the state of Erbil-Baghdad relations, and ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding disputes. The two also discussed recent drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region.
The officials reviewed the role and performance of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), with both sides expressing interest in enhancing cooperation.
President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to working with the United Nations and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue with Baghdad. He also stressed the need for the Iraqi federal government to uphold financial agreements, including the timely disbursement of salaries and dues to the Region, and to prevent further aerial attacks, which he described as a threat to Iraq’s overall stability.
For his part, al-Hassan expressed concern over the repeated drone strikes and voiced the United Nations’ full support for the dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad. He reiterated the UN’s backing for securing the Region’s financial entitlements and ensuring the security and stability of Iraq.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on the latest developments in the broader Middle East region, according to the statement.
