ARK News.. The U.S.-led International Coalition against ISIS has launched a formal investigation after a controversial photo circulated online showing an American military vehicle on patrol near the northeastern Syrian city of Hasakah, bearing the Arabic word "kafir" (infidel) written next to a cross.

In an official statement, the Coalition confirmed that the vehicle had been part of a routine patrol over the past weekend, and acknowledged that the appearance of unauthorized symbols and phrases on the vehicle constitutes a violation of established military regulations.

The Coalition emphasized that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

"This incident does not reflect the professionalism of our forces nor their respect for the Syrian people," the statement read, stressing that it would not affect the Coalition’s core mission of defeating ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
