Blinken praises the important position of the Kurdistan Region as a partner that receives his country’s attention

ARK News… Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, met in Washington with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and they discussed a number of issues of common interest.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government said in a statement on his official Facebook page that the US Secretary of State “praised the important position of the Kurdistan Region as a partner that receives his country’s attention,” and noted that “the United States’ partnership with the region is built on the foundations of common values, interests, and sacrifices.”

He added that the US Secretary of State "expressed his happiness with the Prime Minister's visit and his meetings in Washington, reaffirming the support of the United States to maintain security, peace and stability in the Kurdistan Region as a federal entity within the framework of Iraq."

He continued: "We expressed our gratitude to the United States for its continued support for the Kurdistan Region, and stressed that as a partner of America, we faced many difficult stages together, and we hope to face new challenges side by side."

The meeting's topics included "discussions on protecting the security of the Kurdistan Region, resolving budget problems, ensuring the financial and constitutional rights of the citizens of Kurdistan, respecting the federal system and the constitutional entity of the region, protecting the rights of its components, resuming the export of its oil, in addition to implementing the Sinjar Agreement and removing the militias from the region."

The two sides agreed that "the decisions of the Federal Court and the steps taken against the Kurdistan Region and federalism in Iraq raise concern, and that the constitutional entity of the region, the federal system, and democratic principles in Iraq must be respected."

The meeting witnessed a mutual emphasis on the need for the Kurdistan Region to obtain its share of the budget in a fair and just manner.

Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, held three separate meetings with the US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf, the Under Secretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Ezra Zia, and the Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Jeffrey Pyatt.

During the meetings, they discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, discuss protecting the rights of components, promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence and religious freedom, and normalizing the situation in Sinjar. We also discussed the file of resuming the export of Kurdistan Region’s oil, in addition to ways to develop the energy sector in the region.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, arrived on Saturday evening, February 24, 2024, in the US capital, Washington, in response to an official invitation.

The delegation accompanying the Prime Minister consists of the Minister of Peshmerga, the official of the Foreign Relations Department, and a number of officials.
