Pope Francis condemns the Iranian attack on Erbil and expresses his condolences to the families of the martyrs
ARK News… In his weekly address to the Vatican, Pope Francis condemned the Iranian missile attack on Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, and called for an end to the escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
In response to the missile attack launched by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on Erbil, Pope Francis expressed his condolences to the victims of the attack that targeted civilians, saying that such actions are not included in the principles of good relations with neighbors.
He urged all parties to avoid any further steps that would expand the complexities of the Middle East and formulate war scenarios.
A statement issued by the Kurdistan Regional Security Council said, "At 11:30 p.m. on the night of January 15, 2024, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard launched several ballistic missiles toward civilian areas in Erbil."
The statement added: "Unfortunately, according to preliminary statistics, the bombing resulted in the death of four citizens and the injury of six others," noting that "some of the injured are in critical condition."
The statement continued: “The Revolutionary Guard announced that the bombing targeted sites belonging to the Iranian opposition,” noting that “this is a baseless excuse and we reject it.”
