Regime media: The chances of holding the ninth round of the Constitutional Committee in Amman are almost non-existent

ARK News… The Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria, which met in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, last August 15, announced that the next meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee will be in the Sultanate of Oman.

The final statement of the committee’s work said that the participants look forward to resuming work on the Syrian constitutional track, and holding the next meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in the Sultanate of Oman, before the end of this year, with facilitation and coordination with the United Nations.

In this regard, media outlets close to the Syrian regime announced that the chances of holding the ninth round of the Constitutional Committee in the Omani capital, Muscat, are almost non-existent.

On Thursday, October 4, 2023, Al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the Syrian regime, quoted an Arab diplomatic source without revealing his identity, saying that the chances of the ninth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee being held in the Omani capital, Muscat, are “almost non-existent,” because the United Nations Special Envoy Geir Pedersen He is determined to hold the next round of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva

The Russian Foreign Ministry supported Oman's hosting of the meeting, considering that the Omanis "proved themselves as reliable and impartial mediators."

According to the newspaper, the source confirmed that Geir Pedersen is determined to hold the next round of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, contrary to what was previously agreed upon, which would hold the ninth round in the Sultanate of Oman.

In this context, and regarding the possibility of it being held in Geneva or a neutral place, the newspaper added that the source ruled out holding it in Geneva because Russia would not accept that, saying: Negotiations are still ongoing to agree on a neutral place, because Moscow is still adhering to its decision not to go to Geneva.

The UN envoy held meetings and talks with the Syrian opposition and the Syrian regime, in addition to various countries concerned with Syria, during the UN General Assembly meetings last week.

Pedersen stated that he held constructive discussions on Syria based on Security Council Resolution 2254, the confidence-building process according to the step-for-step principle, the relaunch of the Constitutional Committee and the strengthening of joint efforts from all international circles.
