ARK News… A Canadian website specialized in tourism and travel revealed that Erbil Citadel in the Kurdistan Region is one of the oldest fortified human settlements in the world, and advised tourists to visit this “majestic” site.

The Canadian Travel website said that the castle, located in the historical center of the city of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, is one of the oldest fortified settlements in the world.

The report pointed out that Erbil Castle is available to visit for free. It is located on a majestic oval-shaped hill and was built over thousands of years.

The report added that the hill is surrounded by an impressive wall of towering facades dating back to the 19th century.

According to the report, the oldest evidence of the settlement of the castle at the current site dates back to the fifth millennium BC, and this appeared in written records for the first time in about 2300 BC in the Ebla cuneiform tablets.

The report confirmed that there is some evidence that the site was inhabited since the early Neolithic era, and it competes to be known as the oldest continuously inhabited site on Earth, although in general, the oldest site is Jericho in Palestine.

The report stated that the site has been included on the World Heritage List since 2014, and that entry to it is free, and that an electronic visa for the Kurdistan Region costs about 72 dollars and is valid for 30 days.
