Pineiro: Normalization with the regime will not break the political stalemate in Syria

ARK News… The head of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Paulo Pinheiro, on Friday, September 22, 2023, said that normalization with the Syrian regime without clear and concrete standards will not break the stalemate in Syria.

During the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Pinheiro noted that the current stalemate in Syria cannot be tolerated, explaining that Syrian youth are fleeing the country in large numbers.

He added, "The Syrians see that they have no future in their country," stressing at the same time that Syria is still not safe for the return of refugees.

Earlier, the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria warned that the escalation of fighting and the accelerating economic collapse require an urgent response, stressing that Syria is unsafe for the return of Syrian refugees.

Commenting on the recent wave of protests, the head of the committee, Paulo Pinheiro, said: “Before Syria faces more deeply the effects of escalating violence and economic deterioration, we call on the most prominent actors to stop attacks on civilians and respond to urgent needs, and we urge the regime in Damascus to pay attention and interact.” "Positively aligns with the aspirations and legitimate rights of Syrians as a solution to putting an end to the conflict."

It said in a statement this month, “Despite diplomatic efforts to ensure the stability of the situation in Syria, including through its readmission to the Arab League, Syrians are suffering from worsening fighting and strikes on many fronts, in addition to severe economic deterioration, and the continuation of related violations and attacks of the human rights."
