The content of the meeting between President Barzani and McGurk

President Masoud Barzani, on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, received a senior US delegation consisting of White House Coordinator for Middle East and North Africa Affairs Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security Amos Hochstein and the US Ambassador to Baghdad Alina Romanowski and a number of US State Department advisors.

The meeting dealt with the political situation in Iraq and the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, where it stressed the need to address the differences between the two sides, as well as the role of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in overcoming obstacles to energy in the world.

The meeting also discussed the situation in the Kurdistan Region, where President Barzani stressed the need to hold fair elections in the Kurdistan Region this year, and no excuses for postponing them will be accepted.

He also stressed his desire to continue meetings, communication, and coordination between the political parties to overcome challenges and support the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Regarding the reforms in the ranks of the Peshmerga forces, President Barzani renewed his support for continuing them.

The meeting also dealt with the political situation in the region and the threats of terrorism, as the guest delegation stressed the importance of security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
