In solidarity with the protesters... Messages on the Eiffel Tower to Iran: Stop the executions

The famous Eiffel Tower in the French capital, Paris, was lit up on Monday with slogans in support of Iranian protesters and women fighting for more rights.

Four months after the death of Jina Amini while she was in police custody, the slogan "Women. Life. Freedom" and "Stop the execution in Iran" appeared on the tower, which was among the most prominent chants during the protests that swept the country.

France also summoned the Iranian charge d’Affairs a few days ago over the execution of a British-Iranian citizen accused of espionage.

About 5,000 people, on Monday, demonstrated in front of the European Union Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg in support of anti-government protesters in Iran as Paris prepared to commemorate the Eiffel Tower for Jina Amini, whose death in September sparked the demonstrations.

Iranians in Europe organized the Strasbourg rally on the forty-fourth anniversary of the day the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, left the country forever. The following month, the monarchy collapsed under the weight of the Islamic Revolution, which gave Iran its theocracy.

Execution of a death sentence
It is noteworthy that the Iranian judiciary, on Saturday carried out the death sentence against Ali Reza Akbari, after he was accused of spying for the United Kingdom.

According to the "Mizan" agency affiliated with the judicial authority, the death sentence against Akbari was carried out by hanging after he was convicted of "corruption on earth and harming the internal and external security of the country by transmitting intelligence information," as it put it.

Big step up
Akbari's execution marks a major escalation in tensions between the West and Iran, which were already simmering over Tehran's crackdown on protests across the country.

His execution came at a time when Iran has been witnessing protests since the death of the young woman, Jina Amini, on September 16, 2022.

While the Iranian judiciary announced so far the issuance of 18 death sentences in connection with the protests, 4 of which were carried out.
