The demonstrations turned into a movement against the compulsory veil and the regime in Iran, in the biggest challenge to the authorities since the 1979 revolution that toppled Shah's rule.

The authorities responded violently, killing hundreds of people.

Thousands were arrested and 14 of them were sentenced to death, including a large number on charges of killing or attacking security personnel, according to the judiciary.
