The Kurdistan region of Iraq plans to construct 41 dams to remedy the water crisis

ARK News… The Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq announced the construction of 41 small dams in all regions of the Region, in order to store, collect and conserve water while noting the completion of 5 of them in the administration of the Zakho region.

A statement by the Information Department of the regional government stated that “five of these projects will be established in the independent administration of Zakho, which are five strategic projects to store water on the Khabour river,” noting that “the dams will be built at a cost of more than three billion dinars (about two million dollars). These dams will raise the water level in the river by more than three meters.”

The statement quoted the information director of the Zakho administration, Shivan Abdi, as saying that “the construction work of the three dams has been completed, and that the height of the dams is approximately three meters and the length is 53 meters,” noting that “so far, projects have been completed in which 200 workers work daily, with a lot of machinery and equipment, 75 percent of them were from the local labor force.”

He added, "The aforementioned dams will facilitate the process of cleaning the waters of the Khabour river and will raise the water level in it," noting that "the completion of work on the five projects will greatly benefit agriculture and tourism in the region."
