Belgium commends the role of the Peshmerga forces in defeating ISIS terrorists

ARK News... The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, on Monday, May 9, 2022, received Philippe Van den Polk, the Belgian ambassador to Jordan and Iraq.

At the meeting, ways to strengthen Iraq and Kurdistan's relations with Belgium, the role of Belgium within the framework of the international coalition to eliminate ISIS, the latest developments in the political process in Iraq, and Erbil-Baghdad relations were discussed.

The two sides emphasized strengthening relations and expanding horizons of joint cooperation and agreed that ISIS still poses a real danger and threat to the security of Iraq and the region, so Iraq needs continued international support.

The Belgian ambassador expressed his country's praise and appreciation for the role of the Kurdistan Region in confronting ISIS and the sacrifices of the Peshmerga, stressing that his country will remain a committed partner in supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

For his part, in addition to expressing the Kurdistan Region's thanks and gratitude for the Belgian support and assistance in the war on terrorism, President Nechirvan Barzani stressed the need for cooperation and coordination between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga, especially in areas of the security vacuum.

The conditions of Sinjar and the repeated displacement of the people of the region as a result of security developments, the tasks and activities of UNITAD in Iraq, the internal situation of the Kurdistan Region, and the importance of dialogue for understanding, the issue of freedoms and freedom of expression, the Covid-19 epidemic and its repercussions, the latest developments of the war and confrontations in Ukraine and its effects, the situation of the region in general, the current challenges the world is facing, along with other issues that formed other axes of the meeting.
