The World Health Organization reveals a statistic of suicide cases recorded in Syria over the past 8 years

ARK News… The World Health Organization revealed, in a tweet via "Twitter", a new statistic about the number of suicides recorded throughout Syria during 8 years, on the occasion of the "International Day for the Prevention of Suicides".

The organization said that it had recorded 3,400 cases of suicide in Syria from 2013 until September of this year, adding that it had trained 700 doctors and members of civil society organizations in managing mental health issues and dealing with cases of suicide attempts.

"Save the Children" has previously confirmed the increase in the number of children who attempt or commit suicide in northwest Syria, at a time when the organization warned of a fatal mental health crisis and said that the total number of suicides in the region by the end of 2020 jumped by about 90 percent compared to the first three months last year, according to the Independent.

The newspaper stated that the organization recorded 246 suicides and 1,748 attempts in the last three months of 2020 alone, noting that among those who attempted suicide, at least 42 are aged 15 years or younger, while 18 percent are adolescents and young adults whose age ranges between 16 and 20 years old.

Rights groups have blamed the sharp increase in suicide attempts on harsh conditions in the war-torn region, including poverty, lack of job and education opportunities, domestic violence, and child marriage.

Poverty and the deteriorating living situation are some of the main motives for suicide in Syria, especially in the regime-controlled areas, where the General Authority for Forensic Medicine had previously counted 80 suicides this year, more than half of them by hanging.

It is reported that the areas under the control of the Assad regime and the Syrian Democratic Forces, as well as areas in northwest Syria, are witnessing many suicide cases due to the lack of opportunities for a decent and safe life, in addition to the poor economic and living conditions.
